The Republic of the Marshall Islands consists of 29 atolls, 5 islands and can be divided into two island chains. The most important island is the Majuro Atoll. It is located in Oceania in the Pacific Ocean with a surface area of 181.43 square kilometers. The Marshall Islands geography and terrain are dominated by low lying coral atolls and extensive reefs. Its climate is tropical, hot and humid bordering the typhoon belt. Due to its strategic position, the Marshall Islands played an important role during World War 2 and was the site of several US nuclear weapons tests.

The overall population is approximately 58,413 people. The capital of the country is Majuro, which is also the most populous city with 28,000 inhabitants. Other important towns are Kwajalein and Arno. The country’s largest international airport is Marshall Islands International Airport (MAJ). The airport provides access to all domestic destinations and has a few limited international routes.

The culture is dominated by the Micronesian ancestry. The highest percentage religion in the country is Protestantism. The official languages are Marshallese and English. The Marshallese legal system is based on the English and US common law and supplemented by customary law. The government form is a mixed presidential-parliamentary system. The chief of state and head of government is the elected President David Kabua. The Presidential elections are held every 4 years.

The official currency is the United States Dollar (USD). The country has an open economy, generating a GDP of approximately $215 million, making it the 3rd lowest GDP in Oceania. Its citizens have a per capita income of $3,789. The GDP is mostly made up of the services sector. Almost all of the nation’s income is originating from direct US aid payments. Agriculture and tourism are minor. The nation’s main export products are breadfruit, tuna, coconuts, melons and copra.

The Republic the Marshall Islands has a minor tourism industry. Although it has a variety of beautiful untouched natural reserves, reefs and beaches. It is known for its vast beaches, World War 2 history, fishing, surfing and diving. It has one UNESCO world heritage site. Some of the major destinations include the Arno Atoll, the Kalalin Pass, Ebeye Island, the Bikini Atoll and the Bravo crater. The island nation has a total of approximately 7,000 tourists visiting every year with the majority originating from neighboring islands and Australia.
