Ethiopia Tourist Visa Validity

Since 2018, it has been easier than ever for tourists to obtain a visa to enter Ethiopia. With their electronic visa portal, travelers can apply for and receive their tourist visa in as little as three (3) days.

An Ethiopian tourist visa is a single-entry eVisa (electronic visa) for visitors who intend to stay in the country for tourism or other non-lucrative activities. The visa is issued specifically for tourism and can be obtained for 30 days or 90 days depending on the applicant’s needs.

Ethiopia Tourist Visa Requirements

To apply for an Ethiopian tourist visa, all applicants are required to collect and submit several documents. The following are required for all applicants:

Valid passport

The applicant should hold a passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of arrival in Ethiopia. 

Recent passport-sized photo

Applicants must have a recent, clear passport-sized photo to upload during the visa application process.

Complete application form

Applicants will complete their application form online through the official immigration portal. All application details must be completed accurately for the visa to be processed.

Payment of visa fees

Visa fees can be paid online using a valid credit or debit card.

Applying for an Ethiopia tourist visa is a very straightforward process that can be completed entirely online. Applicants can take the following steps to complete their eVisa application:

  1. Complete the visa application form

    All eVisa application forms can be completed online through the official electronic portal.

  2. Submit the required documents

    Applicants will submit their passport information and a passport-sized photo during the application process.

  3. Pay the visa fee

    Visa fees can be paid online using a valid credit or debit card.

  4. Await visa processing

    Approved visa applications will be confirmed by email and the eVisa will be sent to the applicant within three (3) working days.

Ethiopia Tourist Visa Fees

The fees for an Ethiopia tourist visa depend on the duration of stay the applicant needs. A 30-day, single-entry tourist visa will cost 82 USD. A 90-day, single-entry tourist visa will cost 202 USD. Applicants must ensure they can cover the visa fees before beginning their eVisa application. Unpaid visa fees will result in an unsuccessful application.

Applicants for the eVisa will pay the fees online. Nationals from African States who are unable to pay the visa fees online can make the payment when they arrive to the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in cash.

It should be noted that as of November 18, 2020, credit card payments are not accepted from applicants coming from the following countries:

  • Cuba, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, North Korea, Afghanistan, South Sudan, the Crimea region of Ukraine, and the Syrian Arab Republic.

Ethiopian tourist visas can be obtained online at the official immigration portal. Only nationals of African Union member states are eligible to receive their tourist visa through the visa-on-arrival scheme.

Ethiopia Tourist Visa Processing Time

It typically takes three (3) days to process an Ethiopian tourist eVisa. Applicants are advised to submit their application at least three (3) days in advance of their intended date of travel to Ethiopia. 

Approved Visa Applications

Approved eVisa applications are sent to the applicant by email. Applicants can download and print their eVisa to bring with them to the border when they enter Ethiopia.

Ethiopia Visa Extension

It is possible to request an extension for an Ethiopian tourist visa. Extension requests must be submitted before the expiration date of the original tourist visa. If the expiry date is 1-15 days, the visa can be extended online. If it is above 15 days, it can be extended by visiting the Head Office of the Immigration and Citizenship Service in Addis Ababa and making the request in person. Overstaying a visa without requesting an extension may result in fines or other legal consequences.
