Morocco and Ghana Cement Closer Relations with Visa Waiver Program
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that Morocco and Ghana have agreed to introduce a bilateral visa waiver program, allowing citizens from both countries to travel freely.
Although in the early stages, the visa waiver is expected to be formally approved by both country’s parliaments in the coming months. The visa waiver program comes as both countries seek to collaborate across industrial sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and national security.
Morocco’s ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil, welcomed the deepening relations between both states, commenting that talks between the two had been “fruitful and assuring.”
Lately, both African states have been concerned about regional conflicts and security on the continent. They have stressed the importance of the visa waiver program to enhance the security of Ghanaians and Moroccans seeking to travel.
The visa waiver program is hoped to dispel the widely reported narrative that Ghanaians are subjected to abuse in Morocco with widespread reports of extreme cruelty and massacres. Imane Ouaadil responded to these claims by stating, “all Africans living in Morocco are safe,” adding that “circulated videos on social media [are] falsely claiming that some 700 Africans are being massacred.”
These safety assurances will be highly positive in light of Morocco hosting Ghana’s football match against Madagascar in the African 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
Alongside the visa waiver program, Morocco has doubled the amount of Ghanaian student scholarships available, increasing from 90 to 180 as a gesture of ongoing goodwill between the two African countries.
