Qatari Citizens Gain Visa-Free Access to Canada
Canada has officially lifted visa requirements for citizens of Qatar, a move that took effect immediately following the announcement by Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab on November 25, 2025. Eligible Qatari nationals may now enter Canada using only an electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
The ETA can be obtained online within minutes and usually requires a valid passport, an email address, and a form of payment.
Minister Diab said that the updated policy will reduce travel barriers for eligible Qatari citizens and reflects a broader effort to strengthen economic and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.
Qatari nationals holding valid Canadian temporary resident visas, such as work or student permits, may continue using those documents until their listed expiry or the expiration of their passports.
Canada’s latest step follows a steady rise in bilateral engagement. In 2024, nearly 9,000 Qatari travellers visited Canada, which marked an 11.5% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, trade between the two countries reached approximately $325 million, with growing collaboration in artificial intelligence, renewable energy, agribusiness, and critical minerals.
Minister Diab called the removal of visa requirements a significant milestone in Canada’s relationship with Qatar. She said the change will open up easier access for eligible visitors and support continued economic growth in both countries.
The change follows the recent expansion of the Canada–Qatar Air Transport Agreement in late 2024, which increased air connectivity between the two countries. Officials expect the updated travel policy to contribute to increased tourism, business travel, and investment.
This development marks another milestone in the over 50-year diplomatic relationship between Canada and Qatar.
