EU Confirms Digital Border System By April 2026, ETIAS Planned For Late 2026

Published on: 05 January 2026

The European Union has confirmed that its new digital border management system, the Entry/Exit System (EES), will be fully operational at all external border crossing points by April 10, 2026.

The EES, which officially began on 12 October 2025, introduces a modernized approach to registering non-EU nationals entering and leaving the Schengen Area for short stays. It replaces manual passport stamping with an electronic system that records biometric data and travel details.

Under the new framework, travelers from non-EU countries staying for up to 90 days within 180 days will have their information collected and stored digitally. This includes a scanned passport, facial image, fingerprints, and the date and location of entry or exit.

Biometric data will be captured during a traveler’s first crossing. Subsequent entries or exits will require only a quick verification to streamline border checks while maintaining security standards.

The system is currently being rolled out gradually. Member states have the flexibility to choose when and where to implement the technology at border control points during this transition. According to EU officials, the phased deployment is designed to give border authorities, transport operators, and travelers time to adjust to the new procedures.

Once fully deployed, the EES will serve as a central component of the EU’s digital border strategy. Authorities expect the system to improve border efficiency, increase security, and reduce wait times for legitimate travelers. The platform is also designed to meet the EU’s strict data protection and privacy requirements.

In addition to the EES, the EU is preparing to launch a separate system known as the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This electronic pre-screening tool is expected to begin operations in the last quarter of 2026.

Once in effect, ETIAS will require nationals from visa-exempt countries to apply for travel authorization before entering the Schengen Area. The authorization will be mandatory for short-term stays.

Together, the Entry/Exit System and ETIAS mark a significant shift toward digitized border control across Europe.
