Philippines Proposes New Visa for Digital Nomads
On 24 February 2025, Filipino senator Joel Villanueva filed a new bill that, if approved, could see digital nomads eligible for a new type of visa for travel to the Philippines.
Bill 2991 would create a new visa category for so-called digital nomads—individuals who travel the world while working remotely via digital technology. The proposed visa would permit travel to the Philippines for 1 year and be renewable for subsequent years.
Though digital nomads are typically working for foreign-based businesses outside the Philippines, they contribute significantly to the Filipino economy by sharing their knowledge with local communities and spending money as tourists.
To apply for the visa, digital nomads may need to provide proof of:
- Sufficient income
- Valid health insurance
- Clean criminal history
- Additional entry requirements
Villanueva filed the proposed new visa program in the hopes that it would attract more digital nomads to travel to the Philippines and noted how “the Philippines is a promising destination for those who embrace nomadic lifestyle.”
The proposed bill must pass the Senate before it can be implemented.
