UK Drops ETA Requirement for Airside Transit Passengers
In the latest announcement by the Home Office on January 17, 2025, the UK government announced that it will be removing the ETA requirement for airside transit passengers.
Since the ETA was launched in November 2023, travelers from previously visa-exempt countries required an ETA to transit through the UK.
According to the latest update, travelers will only need an ETA if they’re transiting the UK ‘landside’, meaning they intend to pass through the UK border control before traveling to their next destination. Travelers who are not planning to pass through border control will no longer require an ETA.
This move will mainly affect Heathrow and Manchester airports as they’re the only UK airports that offer transit facilities. The exemption has been stated as a temporary move and will be kept under review.
