The Republic of Mozambique is a former Portuguese colony. Located in Southeastern Africa it consists of 11 provinces. It borders Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The most important provinces are Nampula, Zambezia and Tete. Mozambique is the 16th largest country in Africa with a surface area of 801,590 square kilometers. Its climate is mostly tropical to subtropical. The terrain is characterized by coastal lowlands high plateaus and mountains.

The overall population is over 30 million people. The capital of the country is Maputo. It is also the most populous city with 1.1 million inhabitants. Other important cities of the country are Nampula, Beira and Chimoio. The largest airport is Maputo International Airport (MPM). It has an approximate yearly passenger traffic of 700,000 people. It connects the country to destinations across Africa and Portugal.

Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1976. Its culture is dominated by a mix of traditions and the Portuguese heritage. There is a religious mix in the country, between Christians and Muslims. The official language of the nation is Portuguese. Tribal dialects and languages are still widespread. The legal system is a mix between the Portuguese civil law and customary law. The government form is a presidential republic. President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi is the elected chief of state and head of government. Elections take place every 5 years and the president is elected directly by popular vote.

The official currency of the country is the Mozambican Metical (MZN) with the current exchange rate being MZN 73 to the USD. Mozambique has an open economy, generating a GDP of approximately $41.4 billion. This makes it the 23rd largest economy in Africa. It has a per capita income of $1,331. The main GDP contributing sectors are services, industry and agriculture. Important export goods are aluminum, chemicals, cotton, cashews, sugarcane and tea. The government is currently developing one of the largest natural gas drilling sites.

The Republic of Mozambique is a developing tourism destination offering several attractions. It is known for its vast wildlife, beaches and safari tours in various national parks. It has one UNESCO world heritage site. Some of the major destinations are the Bazaruto Archipelago, the capital Maputo, Pemba, the Gorongosa National Park, Tofo and the Island of Mozambique. The majority of the 2.7 million yearly tourism visitors is originating from the neighboring African countries and Europe.
