About Bahrain

The Kingdom of Bahrain is an Arab country consisting of four governorates. It is located in the Middle East surrounded by the sea and the only connection to the mainland is via a bridge to Saudi Arabia. The four governorates are Capital, Northern, Southern and Muharraq. The country has a total surface area of 780 square kilometers and over 84 islands, half of which are manmade, hence the surface area continues to grow.

The overall population is 1.5 million people with half of it being foreigners. The capital of the country is Manama, which is also the most populous city with a population of 630,000 people. The largest airport is Bahrain International Airport (BAH) with approximately yearly passenger traffic of 9.6 million. BAH is the only public airport in the country, hosting the national carrier Gulf Air with worldwide connections.

Its culture is dominated by Islam with 70% of the population being Muslim and the official language being Arabic. The legal system is a mix of the Islamic sharia law and the English common law. The government form is a federation of monarchies with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa as chief of state. All four governorates are administered by an appointed governor. Matters of national importance are being decided in Manama by the Cabinet, chief of state, and head of government.

The official currency of the country is the Bahraini Dinar (BHD) with a current exchange rate of 0.38 to the USD. The country has an open economy, generating a GDP of approximately $44.1 billion. It has a high per capita income of $29,103. Nowadays, 11% of the GDP is still originating from the petroleum and petrochemical sectors. The government focuses on the development of other sources of income such as the financial and tourism sector to further reduce the dependency on oil and gas.

The Kingdom of Bahrain has a variety of tourist destinations. Some of the major destinations include the Al Fateh Mosque, the Fort of Bahrain, the Tree of Life, the National Museum, Bab Al Bahrain, and the Al Areen Wildlife Park. Tourists visit the country for its warm climate, beaches, hotels, restaurants, and shopping outlets. Bahrain also has a vibrant nightlife and sophisticated fine dining restaurants, attracting many visitors from neighboring Saudi Arabia. The majority of the 4 million yearly overnight tourists are originating from the neighboring Gulf States but there is an increasing number of visitors from outside the region.
