Georgia Reduces Visa-Free Visit Duration for Ukrainian Citizens
On Wednesday 2 April 2025, the Georgian Government announced that the duration of the visa-free stay for Ukrainians would revert back to one year. The decree was signed by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and came into effect immediately.
Previously, Georgia had extended the visa-free travel duration for Ukrainian citizens to three years in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This enabled Ukrainians longer visa-free stays in Georgia than citizens of most countries, including the US and EU countries, who were limited to one year.
Furthermore, on Thursday 3 April 2025, Prime Minister Kobakhidze signed another decree extending the financial aid program for Ukrainian citizens displaced by the war until the end of July 2025. This program offers financial aid to eligible citizens in the form of monthly payments – ₾300 ($110) for families and ₾45 ($16) for individuals.
It is not yet known if the financial aid program will be extended further or if the visa-free travel duration for Ukrainians will change in the future. Since the Russian invasion in 2022, relations between Ukraine and Georgia have been strained.
