The island Republic of Madagascar is a former French colony. Located in Southern Africa it consists of 22 regions. It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, east of Mozambique. The most important regions are Analamanga, Vakinankaratra and Atsimo-Andrefana. The nation is the 22nd largest country in Africa with a surface area of 587,041 square kilometers. Its climate is divided into two climate zones: the tropical coast and the temperate inland. Its terrain is characterized by high plateaus and mountains in the center and narrow coastal plains.

The overall population is 26.2 million people. The capital of the country is Antananarivo, which is also the most populous city with over 1.2 million inhabitants. Other important cities of the country are Toamasina, Antsirabe and Fianarantsoa. The largest international airport is Ivato International Airport (TNR). It connects the country to destinations across Africa, France and Turkey.

The Republic of Madagascar gained independence from France in 1960. Its culture is dominated by a mix of ethnic groups, each following their own set of beliefs and practices. There is a religious mix in the country, between Muslim, Christian and indigenous beliefs. The official languages of the nation are French and Malagasy. The legal system is based on the French civil code with customary law being applied for matters of marriage, family and obligation. The government form is a semi-presidential republic with President Andry Rajolenia as elected chief of state. The Prime Minister is Christian Ntsay as head of government. Elections take place every 5 years.

The official currency of the country is the Malagasy Ariary (MGA) with the current exchange rate being MGA 3,956 to the USD. Madagascar has an open economy, generating a GDP of approximately $45.9 billion. This makes it the 20th largest economy in Africa. It has a per capita income of $1,697. The main GDP contributing sectors are services and agriculture. Agricultural activities are up to 25% of the annual GDP, making it the single most important sector. Madagascar is the world’s largest exporter of vanilla, covering 80% of the worldwide supply.

Madagascar is a developing tourism destination currently offering limited options. It is known for its wildlife and beautiful beaches. The main tourist attractions are beaches and safaris. Some of the major destinations are the Ranomafana National Park, the Masoala National Park, the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga and the Avenue of the Baobabs. There were about 500,000 touristic visits to the country per year in average with the vast majority originating from France.
